History

After high school, I attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1970. The past 40 years I have farmed in the Downs community. I married Glennys (Gilmore) Doane in Nov 1977 and we have three grown children. Amy (oldest) and Edie (youngest) live in Arlington, Virginia and work on the national staff for FCCLA (formerly Future Homemakers of America). Our son, Vic and wife Amanda live in Kansas City and are expecting our first grandson in September. Vic works for a stock trading company and Amanda is a high school teacher. We define success in many ways. Farming has been a rewarding occupation and life style for us. We enjoyed our children in their growing up days and now enjoy watching as they work to accomplish their own life goals. Glennys and I enjoy many community activities especially when we can be involved in projects that support youth. It is important to us to support a legacy with a bright future. The little Rose Valley country church that I grew up in is still active and is the worship spot of our choice. I graduated as a Dragon, but I am equally proud to be a Lakeside Knight. The school consolidation a few years ago enables the Waconda School District to better utilize their resources to continually upgrade the school system so that Lakeside is recognized as one of the best. The mascot has changed, but the tradition continues!

Memories

Some of my fondest memories involve lessons learned and teachers that were good mentors as well as excellent educators. Perhaps communication skills and technical skills learned in high school have been most useful to me. I have lived in this community all of my life, so there have been many opportunities to share stories in a "coffee shop" setting. Most stories are very interesting, all stories are greatly enhanced. We were known as a somewhat ornery class in Vo-Ag. I'm not sure that the classes of '65 and '67 didn't contribute a good share of the disorder. We can discuss that at the next reunion. When we initiated the freshmen, we had a little game called "egg toss" that was memorable...and expensive. The senior sneak motorcycle rental experience resulted in a story that has been told and retold many times. I was proud to play on championship quality sports teams in high school, and to be part of a team effort that was very successful.
